#NewMusic2018 Album Review

Review by Mark Cousens

Bluesky Pie have been supporting the Kent music scene for some considerable time now, but they’ve been quiet for the last couple of years, with only the odd teaser popping up now and again hinting at what they’re up to. Now the cat is out of the bag with this stunning compilation of some of the best unsigned bands Kent has to offer. The album kicks off with ‘Populaton’ by Kavanagh, a mix of blues and grunge with an infectious beat. Following this is a slice of lovely dreamy pop from Canterbury’s Dreamweaver, and the listener will already be left wondering how Bluesky Pie will keep up the high standard throughout ten tracks!

As the album continues through the chilled trip hop of Liotia, to the odd and spooky, but still excellent, ‘Stress is a Killer’ by Church or Jungle; there isn’t a bad track to be found. However, just like you’re not supposed to have favourite children, it would be unfair to single out any one track as the compilation is strong, but ’Like A Drug’ by Tokyo Tea Room just pips the others to the post.

Being a compilation, #NewMusic2018 is a real pick ‘n’ mix of genres, and a real eye opener to the level of talent we have here in Kent.
